Add a seersucker tablecloth to your summer home styling

Seersucker fabric: 150cm wide, £12.00 per metre. Purchase on our haberdashery stall in Kendal’s indoor market hall.

Seersucker is best known as a lightweight and versatile fabric, often with a striped or squared pattern, that has an attractive puckering due to the way it’s woven.

It’s a super fabric for clothing projects but a great place to start is a simple tablecloth project, which only requires cutting and hemming.

The first task is working out the size of the finished tablecloth:

Note: everyday tablecloths usually have a 6- to 8-inch drop from the edge of the table to the bottom hem.

Measure your table width and add two lots of drop to get your width measurement, for example, 42″ table width, plus 7″ drop for lefthand side, plus 7″ drop for righthandside = 56″ wide

Measure your table length and add two lots of drop to get your length measurement, for example, 72″ table length, plus 7″ drop for the top table edge, plus 7″ drop for the far table edge = 86″ length

Once you have purchased your fabric, it’s time to start hemming!

And here are some of our top tips to get the perfect finish:

  1. Prewash your seersucker to avoid shrinkage
  2. Avoid too much pressing as you sew as it can affect the unique puckering finish
