How To Make Your Own Spring Bunting

Bunting has traditionally been used to celebrate whether it be a special occasion or a historic event. In fact, during our research, we found out that the name ‘bunting’ might come from the German word ‘bunt’, which translates to ‘colourful’!

Making some lovely Spring bunting is an easy way to brighten up our homes, and a great way to use up spare fabrics from our stashes. If you’d like to join us, we have put together a quick and easy guide so that you can make your own bunting at home, too.

You Will Need:

  • Fabric – you can use one type of fabric, or up to three different types for a more eclectic finish – we have lots of lovely Springtime prints
  • Pins
  • Sewing scissors
  • Cardboard
  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread
  • Around 3 metres of bias binding or ribbon – you can have a browse in the bias binding and ribbon sections of our shop to see which will look best with your chosen fabric

Method:

  1. Draw a triangle on some cardboard, and cut this out to use as a template. You can decide the width and length of this template yourself.
  2. Pin your template to your fabric, and cut around it – preferably using sewing scissors, which will prevent any fraying.
  3. Repeat, cutting out as many flags as you like – so, if you want 12 flags, you’ll need 24 pieces.
  4. Pin the pieces together in pairs – place your first piece with the right side facing up, and the second piece face down, so that the right sides are together.
  5.  Sew the pieces together, using a 1cm seam allowance on both sides. Don’t sew the top, as this is where you’ll sew on the bias binding tape or ribbon.
  6. Turn your flags the right way round. At this point, it’s a good idea to iron the flags to make them neat and uniform.
  7. Time to include the bias binding tape, or ribbon! Space the flags evenly along your bias binding tape or ribbon, pinning them in place.
  8. Sew on the flags with a straight stitch, making sure to catch the bias binding tape or ribbon as you go. You should aim to leave approximately 40cm of bias binding tape or ribbon at the ends, so that the bunting is easy to hang.
  9. Voila! Hang your bunting in your desired location for a sweet Spring update.
