Cottons for reusable wax wraps

Cottons for reusable wax wraps

One of the best parts of our job is chatting with customers about their projects. Recently, a conversation over the purchase of some cotton squares revealed that reusable wax wraps can be made at home and used as part of the effort to reduce plastic consumption. What a fantastic way to make use of our affordable cotton fabrics, and what a lovely project for us to be able to share with you.

You are welcome to head to the haberdashery any time to review the options available – from pretty florals for covering dishes in a traditional kitchen to bright and breezy prints for school sandwich wrappings, there’s something for all uses!

Reusable food wraps – what do I need?

All you need to make reusable wraps is some cotton and some beeswax. We offer cotton squares measuring 1/8th metre, which are incredibly affordable at just £1.

Of course, there’s no set size for the covers, it all depends on your needs and what you are going to cover. If the squares are a little on the small side, we have a full range of cotton fabrics on the roll (£7.99-£9.99/metre).

Beeswax can be purchased online in blocks or pellets.

Reusable food wraps – how to make your own at home

There are two methods to try.

1. Cover the fabric in the beeswax and then place a layer of parchment paper over the top. Iron the fabric to melt the wax. After melting, hang the fabric to solidify the wax.

2. Cover the fabric in the beeswax, then place it one tray in a pre-heated oven (140 degrees). As the wax melts, remove it from the oven and spread it evenly across the cotton using a paint brush. Hang the fabric to solidify the wax.

The most important part is making sure that the wax is spread evenly making sure that no spots are left bare. You can add a couple of drops of essential oil if you wish.

Reusable food wraps – top tips

If you are using a bar of beeswax, we would recommend grating it, as it’s then easier to melt.

The wax wraps can be used in many different ways – wrapping lunches, cheeses, bread and bakery items, keeping fruit and vegetables fresh, proving doughs, covering fermenting foods. They aren’t suitable for covering meat or eggs.

Custom-sized wax wraps are ideal for lining the shelves in your fridge and keeping them fresh and clean.

They don’t just work in the kitchen, how about using one to wrap soaps or shampoo bars in your luggage?

Using pinking shears to create a zigzag edge helps the wraps to cling that little bit better.

The wraps respond best to warm hands and will cling best when used to cover metal, glass and wood.

You can revive wraps by popping them on a baking sheet in a 140 degree oven, once the wax has melted, you can take it out by its corners and then hang it up. If there are bare spots, simply add a touch more beeswax before you pop it in the oven.

Wax wraps can be washed in cool to warm water, simply wipe them with a dishcloth and some eco-friendly washing up liquid.
